We visit the amazing aqueducts that Herod built to bring water into his city. We continue on to Haifa for a breathtaking view of the city from Mount Carmel at Kaiser’s Watch. Here, we recount the important LDS Church historical events which took place in this area and view the beautiful Baha’i temple and gardens. We visit the Old German Cemetery where two LDS missionaries are buried. We travel east along the top of Mount Carmel to Muhraka to discuss the incredible life of the prophet Elijah. Our next stop is at Megiddo to discuss its interesting history. We continue on to the Galilee, where we spend one to three nights.

We visit Nazareth Village to step back in time in a wonderful re-creation of first-century life in a small Galilean village. Next, we visit the village of Devaria, where we take taxis to the top of Mount Tabor, the traditional site of Christ’s transfiguration. From its heights we see many important New Testament sites. Our next stop is at Ein Herod, where the Lord separated Israel’s military forces for Gideon at the foot of Mount Gilboa. Kursi • Bethsaida • Chorazin • Beit Shean • West Bank

Our first stop today is Kursi, the traditional site where Jesus cast out legions of evil spirits and allowed them to enter the bodies of nearby swine. The geography provides compelling evidence that this may be the actual site of the miracle. Our next stop is Bethsaida, home of Peter and Andrew, and another city where Jesus taught. Our final destination is Chorazin where we have time to explore the black basalt ruins. We discuss the layout of the ancient synagogue, consider the teachings and miracles of Jesus, in this village that ultimately rejected the Master, and was cursed by Him. Our last stop on the lake is Magdala, where we learn of the women in the Savior’s life. In the afternoon, we drive down the Jordan Valley to Beit Shean, the most complete ruins in all Israel. The Roman city of the Decapolis brings the opulence of the Greco–Roman world to life. Just east of the Roman and Byzantine ruins lies the Old Testament tel of Beit Shean. Here the bodies of Saul and Jonathan were hung on the wall for all Israel to see. We then drive to the West Bank and check in to the Haddad Tourism Village, near Jenin, to stay the night. We also visit the Museum of Palestinian History and Culture.

Benjamin Plateau • Shephelah • Valley of Elah • Hebron

We begin our day on the Benjamin Plateau, visiting Nebi Samwil, where Solomon was promised wisdom by the Lord. On a clear day we can see the Mediterranean and Dead seas. Also, we are very near Gibeah, the home village of Saul, king of Israel. We discuss Saul’s rise to power in humility and track his tragic fall and rejection by Samuel and the Lord. We then descend the Benjamin Plateau and drive down the Shephelah to Beit Shemesh (the location where the captured Ark of the Covenant was returned to Israel by the Philistines). Continuing south, we stop in the Valley of Elah where David slew Goliath. We pass Mareshah, where the prophet Micah may have lived. Depending on time and conditions, we hope to visit Hebron, where we see the Tomb of the Patriarchs (Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and their wives); this is the only Herodian building that still stands complete.

Dead Sea • Masada • Bethany

We start the day driving down to the Jordan River to Qasr el Yahud, where we recall the important events that occurred in this area. In Jericho, we visit the Old Testament Tel Jericho before heading south along the Dead Sea, 1,300 feet below sea level. Our next stop is at the ancient mountaintop fortress built by King Herod, Masada. We ride the tram to the top and explore the ruins there. The tram returns us to the bottom where we meet out bus to take us to Qumran, where the Dead Sea Scrolls were found. We conclude the day at the Dead Sea and one of the most enjoyable and unusual swimming experiences of a lifetime. If time allows, we stop at the ancient village of Bethany, where we visit the Tomb of Lazarus and the traditional site of the home where he lived with his sisters, Mary and Martha.

We pass the Knesset Building, where the Israeli parliament meets, on our way to the Israel National Museum. This Museum includes the Shrine of the Book (the museum of the Dead Sea Scrolls) and the wonderfully re-created Model City of Jerusalem, which portrays the city as it looked near the time of Jesus. We next drive to Bethlehem to eat lunch as a group in a Bedouin tent atmosphere before going to the Church of the Nativity (traditional site of the birth of Jesus). We visit a grotto which overlooks a shepherd’s field and discuss the wonderful events of His birth. There will probably be some shopping time during the day.

Jerusalem • Old City • City of David

Our day in and around the Old City begins with a visit to the Ophel area before we walk up to the Temple Mount, which is located atop Mount Moriah—the place where Abraham took Isaac to offer him as a sacrifice. It was also the site of the temples of Solomon and later Herod. Today it is occupied by the magnificent Dome of the Rock and the El Aksa Mosque, making this city the third most sacred site in all the world of Islam. After a visit to the Western Wall, we visit the Jewish Quarter to see Hezekiah’s Broad Wall and stroll down the Roman Cardo, which was originally built by the Roman emperor Hadrian. We enjoy a great adventure as we walk through the excavated City of David, including Warren’s Shaft, and into Hezekiah’s Tunnel─the ancient water system carved through the hill in the time of Isaiah. We continue to the Pool of Siloam, site of one of Jesus’ miracles. After we return to the hotel to change into dry clothes and eat dinner, we enjoy a free evening to experience Jerusalem’s nightlife and prepare for the crescendo of our travels—the final week of the life of our Lord.

Day 12: Friday, June 28, 2019

Jerusalem • Footsteps of Jesus

On this special day we tread the footsteps of the Savior, reviewing the last 24 hours of His mortal ministry. We begin with a visit to the Upper Room, where a Passover meeting was held with Jesus and the Twelve and the sacrament was introduced. Next we visit the site of the house of Caiaphas the high priest, where the Savior was illegally tried after His arrest. In the Garden of Gethsemane, centuries-old olive trees remind us of the sacred account of our Savior’s suffering and arrest. We enter Lion’s Gate, through which we walk to the Pool of Bethesda area to discuss the events in John 5, before going on to the general area of the Antonia Fortress, where Jesus was sentenced to be crucified. After lunch in the Old City, we walk out the Damascus Gate to Golgotha, the place of the Crucifixion, and conclude at the Garden Tomb, where the body of Christ was interred and from which He rose on that Easter Sunday so long ago. We end the day again at the Western Wall to watch religious Jews welcome in the Sabbath.
