Doug Wright is a Utah native with proud pioneer roots that go back to the 1840’s. Most of his 40 plus years in the broadcast industry have been spent with KSL Radio in Salt Lake City where listeners have depended on his knowledge of worldwide political and current events to keep them informed. Now that Doug is retiring, he will have more time to do the things he loves which include reading, collecting books, coins, and historical memorabilia, and spending time with his family. On the cruise, Doug will share with us several of his favorite stories and memories of an unbelievable career in broadcasting. Pre Days 1/2: Saturday - Sunday, Aug 10-11

US Travel to Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Today you will depart the US on your international flight to Amsterdam for your OPTIONAL Pre-night tour in Amsterdam. Upon arrival we’ll be picked up by our motor coach and taken on a panoramic city tour before we arrive at out hotel. we’ll learn about Amsterdam’s colorful history, majestic architecture and liberal culture as you pass pretty canals, bridges thronged with Dutch bicycles, canal houses and more. This afternoon will be free for yours to enjoy on your own. Our hotel is conveniently located to many of the iconic museums of Art the city hosts.

Pre Day 3: Monday – Aug 12

Amsterdam Canal Cruise

This morning you can absorb the canal-front sights of Amsterdam on a leisurely 75-minute sightseeing cruise. Onboard the famous glass-topped boats we’ll enjoy the views as you cruise along the city’s UNESCO World Heritage-listed canals and listen to the informative audio commentary of the city. We’ll pass top Amsterdam attractions such as the Anne Frank House and City Hall, see all the gabled townhouses, bridges and leafy canal sides from the peaceful vantage point of the water. This afternoon is yours to spend at your leisure. (B)

Pre Day 4: Tuesday - Aug 13

Hotel to Cruise ship

Today we’ll get to tour the famous house of Anne Frank. We’ll have times tickets that will allow us to make the most of our time at this historic site before being transferred to your river boat to start your adventure down the Rhine. After boarding, the afternoon is yours to relax or explore the area on your own.

Days 1/2: Monday - Tuesday, Aug 12 and 13

US Travel to Amsterdam, The Netherlands  

Today you will depart the US on your international flight for the to Amsterdam. Upon arrival you’ll transfer to your ship. After boarding, the afternoon is yours to relax or explore the city on your own. If your arrival schedule permits, you may wish to visit the Rijksmuseum, or the Van Gogh Museum next door.

Day 2: Wednesday, Aug 14

Kinderdijk, The Netherlands

This morning we sail to Kinderdijk, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, for a tour of this ingenious network of windmills and other flood management devices. You learn why the windmills were built and see how they work, plus you enter a working windmill for a tour of its mechanisms and living quarters. Return on board for lunch and an enjoyable afternoon of Dutch diversions: sample handcrafted Dutch cheeses and jenever, a distilled juniper liquor, and take in a culturally enriching presentation on the Dutch Golden Age. We cruise through the night.

Day 3: Thursday, Aug 15

Cologne, Germany

Begin your day with a morning tour of Cologne, Germany’s fourth largest city. Stroll through Old Town past St. Martin’s Church and visit the Dom, Germany’s largest cathedral and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Spend your free time enjoying Cologne’s atmospheric waterfront, or perhaps join an optional excursion on which you ascend to the Dom’s roof for up-close views of the cathedral’s architecture and bird’s-eye vistas of Cologne. Afterward, return on board for dinner. Alternately, you may set off on an optional excursion to explore Cologne’s spirited beer culture, sampling Kölsch, a light, crisp beer brewed only in Cologne, and enjoying a brauhaus dinner. After, return to your ship for a late-evening departure.

Day 4: Friday, Aug 16

Koblenz & Rüdesheim, Germany

Proceed along the Rhine, disembarking to tour the 700-year-old Marksburg Castle. Alternately, choose an optional excursion that offers a lively and informative tour of Ehrenbreitstein Fortress, or enjoy an optional guided exploration of Koblenz on foot. After, enjoy an onboard lunch as you cruise the scenic Middle Rhine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where turreted castles and fortresses overlook the river from their hilltop posts. Arrive in Rüdesheim in the late afternoon. Spend free time in the pedestrian-only Drosselgasse and sample a glass of locally produced wine at one of the restaurants or wine bars. Dine on board your ship, or in town if you prefer. You may also choose to experience one of our optional dinners on shore tonight. We depart after midnight.

Day 5: Saturday, Aug 17

Heidelberg & Speyer, Germany

Cruise into mid-morning as you enjoy the passing scenery. After breakfast, disembark for a tour of Heidelberg, the home of Germany’s oldest university, founded in 1386. Visit the beautiful sandstone ruins of imposing Heidelberg Castle and take in the scenery of the Neckar River Valley and the city’s many red rooftops from this hilltop post. Continue with a walking tour through Old Town to Heidelberg’s renowned gates. On your way back to your ship, visit the historic town of Speyer and take in views of the imposing Romanesque cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built in the 11th century on the site of a former basilica, the building’s design influenced Romanesque architecture for centuries to come, and is the final resting place of eight German monarchs. Its soaring interior features graceful rows of sandstone columns and a large stained-glass window that was installed in the western facade during a later Gothic period.

Day 6: Sunday, Aug 18

Strasbourg, France

We dock this morning in Kehl and disembark for a guided tour of Strasbourg. See the European Parliament and tour the interior of the city’s famed cathedral. The afternoon is free to further explore this Alsatian city’s blend of French and German cultures, resplendent churches, medieval covered bridges, verdant parks and handsome Art Nouveau and modernist architecture. Alternately, join our optional excursion into Alsatian wine country for an informative winery tour and tasting. Or, spend your full day exploring culinary Strasbourg on an optional excursion; as you explore the city and take in its sights, savor samples of the renowned Alsatian cuisine, from regional dessert specialties and meats to wine pairings with local foods. On board this evening, enjoy a Taste of Germany dinner event.

Day 7: Monday, Aug 19

Breisach, Germany

Arrive in Breisach this morning, gateway to the Black Forest. Take a scenic excursion through the area’s renowned mountain landscape, rolling meadows and dense forests. Once there, visit a local workshop to see a cuckoo clock-making demonstration, and learn how Black Forest Cake is made. Return to your ship for lunch. This afternoon, perhaps join an optional excursion to the quaint Alsatian town of Colmar to discover the storybook charm of its streets lined with medieval, Gothic and Renaissance buildings, and visit a fine arts museum. Alternately, choose an optional excursion that explores Colmar’s World War II history. Dine on board this evening and cruise on through the night.

Basel – Lucerne - Zurich

After breakfast we’ll disembark the ship and start the OPTIONAL *Post-cruise* stay in Switzerland.  We will enjoy a panoramic bus tour of Basel admiring the cities bold and modern architecture as well as the history of this bustling city. We travel on to Lucerne to enjoy this medieval town set on a beautiful Lake. We’ll have a lunch stop before we tour the city seeing the quaint hidden alleys, Jesuit Church, the amazing “museggmauer”, the cities walls and towers, and of course the Chapel Bridge. Our day will end in the business capital city of Zurich.

Post Day 9: Wednesday, Aug 21

Zurich City Tour

Today we’ll see the best of Switzerland's business and cultural city on a highlights of Zurich city tour. Our guide will show us the city's top attractions, including the shopping haven of Bahnhofstrasse, the Opera House, National Museum, and charming Old Town. We’ll take an uphill ride on a cogwheel train to enjoy panoramic views over the city and then take a 1-hour cruise on Lake Zurich. Since everyone loves chocolate, we’ll top off our tour with a stop at Lindt & Sprüngli chocolate shop.

Zurich travel to home

Today we’ll bid farewell to Switzerland and travel home with wonderful memories to last a lifetime.
